Today being mental health awareness day, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge anyone who’s fighting/dealing with any sort of mental issues and to reassure you that it is okay to not be okay.
In the African community especially, mental issues are somehow disregarded and to those that are religious mental issues are automatically seen as a spiritual battles or rather a taboo to discuss . Yes spiritual battles exist but so does mental health.
Many of us have experienced some sort of mental issue whether it’s depression, anxiety or the severe ones but were too afraid to address it in fear of being judged or simply called out as dramatic and attention seeking.
Let help each other by checking up on our friends and family and by that I mean checking their mental state. Picking up on odd habits that are developing and creating a safe space where one can feel encouraged to open up about whatever it is they are dealing with. Let’s be helpful and save the lives of the ones that feel like they’ve reached the end.
Mental health is real… It is okay to not be okay but don’t keep it to yourself.. Talk to someone. Someone’s always willing to help and listen. There is so much help available whether it’s online, at hospitals, help centers etc. There are qualified people that can help if you don’t want to talk to your friends and family.
To anyone dealing with mental issues.. You are not alone and you will get through this.
